Why bother learning Self Defense? It’s impossible to prepare for every situation.
I saw this question online the other day. And I wondered if there were others who may have asked a similar question.
It’s true that we can’t prepare for every situation. There are just too many variables. So why should anyone bother?
Because self defense is about more than just strikes and techniques. It’s about Threat Awareness, Defensive Mindset and Building Confidence.
Threat Awareness skills help you notice dangerous situations so you don’t get taken by surprise. Being aware of your surroundings can give you time to leave the area and avoid danger. And if you can’t get away, you’ll at least have time to prepare to defend yourself.
When you develop a Defensive Mindset, you give yourself permission to defend yourself. You learn to accept that anyone, anywhere, can be violently attacked. Even you. You learn to accept that your life is worth defending. And you learn to give yourself permission to do whatever is necessary to defend yourself, including injuring your attacker.
And after learning Threat Awareness skills, developing a Defensive Mindset and learning some defensive strikes, targets and techniques, you will become self confident.
Not interested in Martial Arts? There are many programs that teach non-martial arts self defense classes. They teach strikes, targets and techniques that are easy to learn and remember. And they’re effective.
No matter which type of self defense class you choose, if all they do is teach strikes/techniques, with no awareness or defensive mindset instruction, find a different program.
Remember that defensive skills are perishable. So you need to practice them now and then. And the more you practice, the more competent and confident you will become.
No, you won’t be able to plan for every single situation that might come your way. But you’ll at least be prepared and confident enough to defend yourself, no matter the situation.
Your safety, your life, is worth the effort.
