Male Driver uses Flashing Lights to pull Woman Driver Over

It’s an old crime. But still going strong. Males are pretending to be police by attaching flashing lights to their car. When they spot their victim, they use the flashing lights to pull their target over.

It happened last month in Canada. And it’s happening across America too.

On 3/16/2023, in Halifax, some guy pulled up behind a car driven by a woman. He turned on his car’s flashing red and white lights (which he had installed). The woman pulled over to the side of the road and the guy pulled in behind her.

Luckily, “the woman and her passenger became concerned that the vehicle and its lights did not look like a real police vehicle.”

They drove away while calling 911 to report the incident.

The two women were suspicious of the way the flashing lights looked. So they chose to drive away while calling police. That action may have saved their lives.

If you ever get stopped by a car with flashing lights, and it doesn’t look or feel right, whatever you do… Do NOT get out of your car. Keep all doors locked and windows up.

[See below for advice from LEO’s…]

If you think it could be a real LEO but just aren’t sure, you could open your window just a sliver to explain your concerns, ask to see a badge and tell them you are calling for verification.

If it is an imposter, asking for ID and telling them you’re calling the police may be enough to make them leave you alone.

Keep in mind, if it turns out to be a female who stopped you, there still could be cause for concern. Women are sometimes coerced into helping male predators. And some are willing partners. So if you are unsure, ask for ID and call the police for verification.

Advice from the Police

Middletown Police Maj. Scott Reeve
If someone suspects they are being pulled over by a person who is not a police officer, they should drive to a populated area before stopping and call 911.

Capt. Pedro Hernandez with the Kyle Police Department
Officers have badges and issued photo IDs that list their position and title. Drivers have the right to ask for these IDs and see them at any time during a traffic stop. Suspicious drivers may also call 911 to get confirmation that an officer is trying to pull them over.

If in a rural area, drivers can turn on their flashing lights and wave out of their window to acknowledge they will pull over and drive the speed limit to the closest lit, public area.

Manchester, NJ Police:
* If you are being pulled over by an unmarked or questionable police vehicle and you’re unsure of its authenticity, call the police department and ask them to verify that the stop is legitimate.

* If you are being pulled over by an unmarked car in a desolate area, gesture politely with your hand and proceed to a safe, well-lit area.

* If you are approached by a plainclothes officer in an unmarked car, keep your hands where they can be seen and politely ask the officer for identification other than a badge or request that a supervisor or a uniformed officer be called.

* Photograph of the vehicle or license plate of the vehicle if it can be done safely.

Police say if you take these precautions and make it clear to officers that you aren’t avoiding them, you cannot be criminally charged.
